Finding out that you have esophageal squamous cell cancer (also called esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and squamous cell esophageal cancer) can be upsetting and frightening, but getting your treatment plan in place can help restore a sense of confidence and calm. People with early-stage esophageal squamous cell cancer may only require an endoscopic procedure (which uses a lighted tube inserted into the esophagus) that kills cancer cells. For many patients, though, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma treatment typically requires some combination of surgery (to remove part of the esophagus), radiation, and chemotherapy.
However, surgery is usually not an option for patients who have stage IV esophageal squamous cell cancer, which has spread to distant organs and lymph nodes. Fortunately, new treatment options are available for people with inoperable esophageal cancer. One relatively new treatment for esophageal squamous cell cancer helps the body’s immune system kill malignant cells: Immunotherapy for esophageal cancer may be added to chemotherapy to improve symptoms and increase survival. Another new treatment for esophageal squamous cell cancer is known as targeted therapy, which takes aim at specific proteins that cancer cells need to grow, and is available for certain forms of the disease. Clinical trials are also underway for patients with esophageal squamous cell cancer.
A clinical trial is a research study in which scientists evaluate the effectiveness and safety of new medical treatments. That includes new drugs or novel combinations of drugs for treating cancer and other diseases. Every drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had to be tested first in clinical trials.
