Squamous Cell Lung Carcinoma

Squamous Cell Lung Carcinoma

Squamous Cell Lung Carcinoma

Squamous cell lung carcinoma occurs in about 3 out of 10 lung cancer cases. It develops in the early forms of squamous cells, which are the cells that cover the inside of the airways in the lungs.

Squamous cell lung carcinoma (SCC) is often associated with tobacco use and tends to be located in the central parts of the lungs close to the main airway (bronchi). Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for about 85% of lung cancers. There are three main forms; adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell carcinomas.

What Are The Symptoms of Squamous Cell Lung Carcinoma?

SCC is also called Epidermoid carcinoma. It is the second most common type of non-small cell lung cancer. Symptoms include:

  • Persistent cough
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Involuntary and unexplained weight loss
  • Respiratory problems
  • Joint or bone pain
  • Weakness
  • Coughing up blood

Tobacco use is a leading cause of lung cancer. Smoking or second-hand smoke (Passive smoking) is responsible for 80% of deaths related to lung cancer. Many factors such as air pollution, asbestos exposure, and other chemicals also contribute to an increased risk for cancer development.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

SCC Risk Factors

Risk factors are situations that affect the likelihood of contracting a disease. Different types of cancer have different risk factors. While some risk factors such as smoking can be prevented, others such as family history or patient age cannot.

Other risk factors include:

  • Second-hand smoke
  • Asbestos exposure
  • Exposure to other carcinogens (Radioactive substances such as uranium, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, nickel compounds, chromium or coal products, mustard gas, inhaled chemicals such as chloromethyl ethers and diesel exhaust)
  • Air pollution

Can Squamous Cell Lung Carcinoma Be Cured?

You should talk to a specialist doctor about the most appropriate treatment option and possible side effects for you.
