Multiple myeloma is a cancer formed by malignant plasma cells. It is characterized by several features: low blood counts, bone and calcium problems, infections, kidney problems, monoclonal gammopathy, light chain amyloidosis and solitary plasmacytomas. Risk factors include, but are not limited to, obesity, workplace exposures, radiation exposure, family history and having other plasma cell diseases. There is no known way to prevent multiple myelomas from developing because there are very few cases linked to risk factors that can be avoided.
