Understanding Your Options for Treating FGFR-Positive Cancer

If your doctor has told you that your cancer is FGFR-positive, it means that you have certain alterations, in the FGFR gene. Normally, FGFR is responsible for producing a protein called FGFR that plays a role in cell growth and division. However, alterations in this gene appear to promote various forms of cancer. There are different variations of these alterations, called FGFR1, FGFR2, FGFR3, and FGFR4. Genetic testing can determine if you have an FGFR alteration.

There are currently a few drugs available for treating FGFR-positive cancers, including bladder and bile duct cancers. However, scientists are investigating whether other cancers will respond to drugs that target these gene alterations. For example, FGFR1, FGFR2, and FGFR3 have all been linked to breast cancer in a small subset of patients. Breast cancer clinical trials involving patients with FGFR alterations and other genetic abnormalities are underway.

      What Are Clinical Trials?

A clinical trial is a research study in which scientists evaluate the effectiveness and safety of new medical treatments. That includes new drugs or novel combinations of drugs for treating cancer and other diseases. Every drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had to be tested first in clinical trials.
