If your doctor has told you that your cancer is ALK-positive, it means that you have certain alterations, or mutations, in the ALK gene. Normally, the ALK gene helps cells grow, but an ALK mutation can promote cancer. Genetic testing can determine if you have the ALK mutation.
Currently, doctors may test for the presence of this mutation to make treatment decisions in patients with a few conditions, including non-small cell lung cancer and anaplastic large cell lymphoma. However, scientists have discovered that rare cases of certain other cancers may be driven by a mutation in ALK.
