Understanding Your Options for Treating Multiple Myeloma

Finding out that you have multiple myeloma can be upsetting and frightening, but getting your treatment plan in place can help restore a sense of confidence and calm. Your doctor will discuss your multiple myeloma treatment options, and the right one for you will depend on a variety of factors, including your age, symptoms, overall health, and the results of certain tests.

Some patients with the form known as smoldering multiple myeloma may feel fine and not require immediate treatment, though about half develop symptoms within five years of diagnosis. For symptomatic patients, multiple myeloma treatment usually takes the form of chemotherapy, though some patients are candidates for stem cell transplants, in which healthy blood-forming stem cells from a donor are infused into the bone marrow. The newest treatment for multiple myeloma is called CAR-T cell therapy, which boosts the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. Other myeloma treatments are being studied in clinical trials.

      What Are Clinical Trials?

A clinical trial is a research study in which scientists evaluate the effectiveness and safety of new medical treatments. That includes new drugs or novel combinations of drugs for treating cancer and other diseases. Every drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had to be tested first in clinical trials.
