Cutaneous Melanoma Treatment Options
Finding out that you have cutaneous melanoma (also called cutaneous malignant melanoma) can be upsetting and frightening, but getting your treatment plan in place can help restore a sense of confidence and calm. Your doctor will discuss your cutaneous melanoma treatment options, and the right one for you will depend on a variety of factors, including your age, overall health, and the results of certain tests. When cutaneous melanoma is detected early, it can usually be surgically removed, with no other treatment necessary. However, if imaging tests indicate that the malignancy has spread to distant organs or lymph nodes (called metastatic cutaneous melanoma or metastatic malignant melanoma), surgical removal of all the cancer isn’t possible. Patients with inoperable melanoma (also called unresectable melanoma) require systemic treatment, which seeks out and kills cancer cells throughout the body.
Until recently, the main form of systemic therapy for metastatic cutaneous melanoma was chemotherapy. However, there have been two melanoma treatment breakthroughs in recent years. First, a new class of drugs called targeted therapies has become available as a metastatic cutaneous melanoma treatment. These drugs are designed to identify and attack cancer cells that have certain genetic mutations. Likewise, immunotherapy is a form of treatment that bolsters the body’s natural defense network to help it kill cancer cells. Scientists are currently studying other new medicines for treating metastatic cutaneous melanoma in clinical trials.
What Are Clinical Trials?
A clinical trial is a research study in which scientists evaluate the effectiveness and safety of new medical treatments. That includes new drugs or novel combinations of drugs for treating cutaneous melanoma and other forms of melanoma. Every drug approved by regulators such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency had to be tested first in clinical trials.
